Twenty first century could be considered as the era of information. The growth of technology has amplified storage and transfer of huge amount of either significant or insignificant data. But, unfortunately, more and more incidents of their loss or leak have been noticed. These incidents can have severe negative consequences, regarding the integrity of an organization. The goal of the present paper is the provision of information about the value of data in a company, the presentation and the analysis of data leak or loss prevention technologies (DLP), as well as ways for the optimal protection of a company’s or an organization’s sensitive data. In addition, DLP architectures and implementation technologies are being analysed. Also, there is a reference to software, in terms of data leak prevention and specifically to free software OpenDLP. An example of its use is also presented. Concluding, future expansions and improvements of the DLP technology are recommended for a friendlier in use and effective version of it. Within the end of this paper, we can reach a step closer to better comprehension of the data importance, the dangers it faces and the most suitable ways for its preservation.
