Abstract
Introduction: Type II Diabetes Mellitus, as a chronic metabolic disease, affects patients' lives and evolves better when there is support from trained and positively staffed staff.
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to capture the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of nursing staff towards patients with DM.
Population and Method: The questionnaire was distributed and answered by 159 nurses in a hospital in Thessaloniki who are working in all shifts and clinics.
Results: According to the data gathered, the Nursing Personnel has a relatively good knowledge of the DM while the Assisting Nursing Personnel has lower level of knowledte. The majority of the NP accepts the rights of patients with DM except from a 25-27.7%.
The NP adopts misconceptions about the DM and these are related to the knowledge of the DM, and may influence the taking of preventive measures. Misconceptions are related to non-recognition of problems and consequently to non-response to the care needs of patients with DM.
The NP generally accepts its clinical role and almost equally its role in the education of patients and their families, while at lower rates it accepts its researchers and management role.
The attitude of the NP to the DM is linked, in demographic terms, to the level of knowledge, participation in conferences, years of service and the existence of another degree.
Conclusions: As can be seen from the processing of the survey data, it could safely be said that the key to quality patient care is the education of the NP. Because if the NP's knowledge is improved in relation to Type II DM, then patients' rights will be recognized, misconceptions will be adopted at a much lower level and the risks involved will be greatly reduced. Knowledge increases the acceptance of all aspects of the Nursing role, thus creating a better Nursing personnel.
