Dementia and diabetes are increasing epidemics. Pro-diabetes and diabetes shows linking with hypovitaminosis-D such as diabetes and memory loss seems to connecting as well. Studies have shown an association between vitamin-D levels and cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer Disease (AD). These dementia disorders mainly appeared to elderly, while they will develop and gradually increased these symptoms. Although correlation among these three factors requires answers. This study was seeking the prevalence and correlates of vitamin-D, dementia and glucose metabolism among elderly pre-diabetic (IGT) and diabetic patients. Eighty four elderly individuals over 60 years old selected and separated in three groups. DM patients, IGT group and Control group of healthy individuals as were investigated in this study in a local suburb region of Thessaloniki. All groups were matched regarding gender, Vitamin-D, HbA1c, RMR, VO2 and MMSE test. Also Fitmate pro was used to calculate RMR and VO2. The data were collected and analyzed with SPSS. Significant positive correlation among Vitamin D levels and MMSE appeared in total and diabetes mellitus group (P < 0.05). Furthermore vitamin D levels being related to HbA1c with significant negative correlation in control group. These findings represent the significance of vitamin D with dementia as well as with glycemic markers. Vitamin D supplementation may improve dementia in diabetic patients.
