PURPOSE
The purpose of this dissertation wasto study a special protocol ofan anterior cruciate ligament’ s (ACL)full recovery of a football player(case study) - amateur level- category A1 and after the physical therapy assessment and ergometers tests, the full integration of the athlete in sport action, which in this case is football.
METHODS
A) Literature review through bibliography and internet sources. Information through the following internet databases were used: PubMed, Pedro, PT Journal, NSCA’S Performance Training Journal, NSCA Strength and Conditioning and internet sites and search tools such as Google, Physioscience, Copernic, NATA, EXRX, Gssiweb. B) Research protocol: Guidance and scientific support of the athlete throughout his rehabilitation protocol up to his first official game appearance.
In this particular dissertation apart from the traditional physical therapy and rehabilitation modalities and methods, we accomplished in a unique way the treatment and coaching exercises about rehabilitation per day (from the 1st week after- surgery until the 23rd week and the athlete’s return in football field), the presentation of the training courses both in the gym and in the field, with exclusive simulation of the exercises in football. Also, the differences facing an amateur football player compared to a professional became obvious. There were 39 sports factors of fitness, related to the football and functional exercises to preventligament injuries. Furthermore, elements from the kinesiology, the anatomy, the biomechanics, the sports psychology, the coaching, the ergometry and strength training (strength and conditioning)were taken in account. Moreover, there was a detailed reference in neuromuscular coordination programs, which include over 160 exercises. Finally, they were adduced workouts for the improvement of cardiorespiratory endurance, 18 pelvic girdle empowerment trainings and special exercises with technical and tactic exercises in the field with more than 370 photos in total. In regular intervals were perceivedthe four factors of athletic performance.
RESULTS OF THE STUDY:
Based on the recent literature review the author did not find a thorough research concerning the functional rehabilitation of the ACL in football implemented by a physical therapist – orthopedic surgeon alongside a physical conditioning trainer from the athlete’s first day of injury - surgery - rehabilitation up to his first official game appearance. However, there are some studies in the literature that give basic guidelines depending on the week of rehabilitation that the athlete is in. The main purpose of this case study was to bring together all the information available in the literature and use that knowledge in order to fully rehabilitate an athlete’s ACL. In this particular case study, we also present the field exercise and weight training exercise micro and macrocycles always bearing in mind that the exercises that the athlete had to undertake had to mimic playing situations. Also, the differences of an amateur footballer when compared to a professional player had to be mentioned. Finally, it is obvious that the strategic cooperation of all the health professionals is mandatory for the athletes own health and safe return to athletic competition.
CONCLUSION:
In this dissertation the physiotherapy specifics that need to be known by the physiotherapist during the sessions, the various training variables that need to be implemented throughout the rehabilitation of an ACL injury were presented to you, as well as, a unique rehabilitation protocol that applied functional progression exercises for this sport. Also, it is obvious that many studies in the literature have been conducted in different times all over the world, which relates to individual protocols for the rehabilitation of the anterior cruciate ligament, depending on the week that the athlete is in and what we hope to achieve. However, in the literature there is not a thorough research concerning and comparing with many details all the parameters that have to be taken into account during the functional rehabilitation of the ACL from the 1st day after- surgery until the official return in football and involving the cooperation of medical staff with the patient (in professional level there are more operators) for the normalreturn in football. This is a “gap” in the literature and this study attempts to complete it.
