Μελέτη Καταγραφής της Συµµετοχής των Ασθενών µε Σακχαρώδη ∆ιαβήτη Τύπου 2 στη Λήψη Θεραπευτικών Αποφάσεων (Master thesis)

The prevalence of diabetes is constantly increasing worldwide, so member countries of the World Health Organization must develop a program of prevention and confrontation of diabetes complications to reduce the social and economic burden. Purpose: The goal of this study is to describe diabetes and the treatment practices that patients have to follow with the help of doctors and nurses. More specifically, the goal is to record the participation of type two diabetes patients in the treating decisions. Methodology: For this study questionnaires were used, which were distributed to patients with type two diabetes in Serres and Kilkis. This study aimed at researching the opinion of patients regarding their participation in decision making as far as their treatment is concerned and their knowledge on the disease. After collecting the data, it was processed using appropriate methods so that the results of the study can be depicted. Results: The results show that before starting treatment, a high percentage of patients is referring to their conversation with their doctor, who after hearing their concerns showed respect to them and explained the situation in an understandable fashion. Lastly, more than half of the sample reports that after their communication with the doctor, they understand their therapy and what the next steps are if therapy does not achieve the glycemic goal. Conclusion: Patients who suffer from diabetes should be informed about the disease and the complications that might appear if they do not change their life style, targeting prosperity and better quality of life in their daily lives. Doctors’ assistance in changing the lifestyle and helping the patient make decisions can support the latter in making the important changes in his daily life to make it normal.
