Background: Studies report that Mediterranean diet exerts a preventive effect on the prevalence of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs). However there is no data available on the adherence of children and adolescents with FGIDs to Mediterranean Diet. Aim of the study was to study the adherence of children with FGIDs and the relationship between Mediterranean diet and the prevalence of FGIDs in childhood and adolescence. Methods: Data were collected from 1268 children (634 boys and 635 girls aged 4-17 years). The identification of the children that fulfilled the criteria for FGIDs was based on the Questionnaire on Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms Rome III (QPGS-RIII). The adherence to Mediterranean Diet was assessed with KIDMED Index. Also data from dietary 24h recall were analyzed. Results: Full data were available on 835/1268 questionnaires. Based on Criteria Rome III, 184/835 children (22,03%) demonstrated FGIDs. Children aged 10-17 years had significant higher prevalence of FGIDs compared to those aged 4-10 years(p=0,002). The average KIDMED score in the total sample was 5,7(±2,38). low adherence to Mediterranean Diet displayed 17,6% of children , 60,1% had medium and 22,3% high . Children with FGIDs demonstrate lower KIDMED score 5,2 (±2,4) (p=0,001) compared to those without 5,85( ±2,35). Similarly for children with Functional Constipation (n=119/184 KIDMED 5,3 (±2,2) , (p=0,038). The adolescents consumed significant more dietary fat (p<0,005), dissaccharides (p=0,02) and lower amounts of dietary fiber (p=0,002) and gr of insoluble dietary fiber (p=0,01) compared to the younger ones. Conclusion: Children with FGIDs demonstrate lower adherence to Mediterranean diet irregardless of age. The adolescents have significant higher incidence of FGIDs towards younger children that co exists with higher consumption of dietary lipids, disaccharides and lower consumption of dietary fiber.en
