The violent clashes of the conflicting interests that intended to gain power in Syria and Iraq, and the violations of the human rights, the decline of the security conditions and the deterioration of the humanitarian status in other countries , led to the creation of refugee outflow. Everything started in the Middle East when thousands of refugees left their countries and headed towards Europe and specifically Northern and Central Europe. The epicenter of the refugee crisis is Greece especially the 10 Mediterranean islands among which is the island of Lesvos. Through the sea route , thousands of refugees and immigrants reach the shores of the island seeking for shelter. Those refugee flows became more intense during the Summer of 2015 with multiple effects ( social , economic , political etc. ). Given that the economy of Greece and naturally the economy of those islands is based on tourism the impact was dramatic. Distortion of the touristic image of the islands , reduction of the touristic demand combined with economic crisis and the inabilityto manage the refugee overflow and respond to the demands of the recent events led to confusion. Those evidence combined with the lack of scientific research on the subject , which is the impact of the refugee – immigrant crisis on the tourism of Greece , made the materialization of a primary research imminent . Thus we are called to study in great detail from all the point of views the advantages and disadvantages so that we can objectively answer the question “ Did the huge refugee – immigrant wave negatively affect the tourism of the island of Lesvos”.
