Sport at amateur and professional level is an important part of life for many people. During physical exercise, the athlete's body, particularly the muscles receive large stresses and often get injured thus affecting the athletic performance. The prevention of injuries, psychological stimulation and rehabilitation after injuries is essential for the athlete.
This Graduate Thesis presents the physiotherapeutic approach using massage and the review of techniques in athletes for the achievement of the above objectives. The content is divided into two parts, General and Specific. In part 1, is presented massage generally and the history of massage, the effects on body systems, preparation and evaluation by the physiotherapist for a session and briefly the techniques used. In part 2, is presented the history of sports massage, the techniques used in sports massage, the types of massage regarding the use between or after a match or training session, the relationship of the physiotherapist both with the athletes and other colleagues, effects on various parameters of the athlete, massage in different sports, alternative massage methods and the importance when combined with different tools and other types of athletes’ treatment and preparation.
The purpose of the thesis is to present and analyze the ways and techniques of sports massage and quote evidence and research from arthrography and bibliography for the effects on the athletes’ body and the massage effectiveness when combined with tools and other forms of treatment.
