The formal paper discusses the issue of tourism development in Greece, with case study the city of Thessaloniki. At the beginning, there is a brief reference to the concepts of tourism, tourist and touristic product. Afterwards, there is a reference to the concept of development. Subsequently, the alternative forms of tourism are presented. After the in depth examination of the alternative forms of tourism, data and information are shown, concerning tourism development in the world, in Greece and in Thessaloniki. At the end of this paper, conclusions are drawn regarding the development of alternative tourism in Greece in general and in Thessaloniki in particular.
