The purpose of this dissertation is related to the collection, recording and presentation of data on the contribution of aviation to the development of tourism in a particular location.
The first chapter defines tourism and its theoretical relevance and the characteristics of its demand are theoretically approached. The same chapter analyzes the reasons for the spread of air transport, their major contribution to the global economy, their tax treatment, the environmental challenges they face, their role in development and the goals to be achieved in the future.
The second chapter examines how air transport and tourism interact globally. It outlines the stages of the transport planning process in order to be able to quantify the future trends for the world's air travel in 2020. An essential part of the aviation industry is low-cost carriers that contribute greatly to global tourism and are constantly developing despite the volatile economic environment and the problems of large airlines. They analyze their basic characteristics, their usual practices, their course over time and their future influence on tourist traffic.
The third chapter approaches the contribution of aviation to Greek tourism. In the introduction, the general contribution of transport to Greek tourism is examined and the extent to which aviation affects the Greek tourist product is analyzed. The latest developments, airline weaknesses in the Greek area are highlighted and emphasis is given to the contribution of Heraklion Airport to the overall air tourism demand of our country. In addition, an attempt is made to explain the role of low-cost companies in the Greek region, the domestic status of ground handling and compare Greece and its rival host countries with regard to air services.
Finally, the findings from the above study are presented and proposals are made for a larger future contribution of aviation to Greek tourism, which will give new prospects in the country, despite the difficult economic conditions.

| Abstract: | Σκοπός της παρούσης πτυχιακής εργασίας, σχετίζεται με τη συλλογή, την καταγραφή και την παρουσίαση στοιχείων για το θέμα της συμβολής των αερομεταφορών στην ανάπτυξη του τουρισμού σε ένα συγκεκριμένο τόπο.
Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο ορίζεται ο τουρισμός και προσεγγίζονται θεωρητικά η σημασία του και τα χαρακτηριστικά της ζήτησής του. Στο ίδιο κεφάλαιο αναλύονται οι λόγοι της εξάπλωσης των αερομεταφορών, η μεγάλη συνεισφορά τους στην παγκόσμια οικονομία, η φορολογική αντιμετώπισή τους, οι περιβαλλοντικές προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζουν, ο ρόλος τους στην ανάπτυξη και οι στόχοι που πρέπει να επιτευχθούν στο μέλλον.
Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο εξετάζεται ο τρόπος με τον οποίο οι αερομεταφορές και ο τουρισμός αλληλεπιδρούν σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο. Αναφέρονται τα στάδια της διαδικασίας σχεδιασμού των μεταφορών ώστε να μπορούν στη συνέχεια να προσδιοριστούν αριθμητικά οι μελλοντικές τάσεις για τις αερομεταφορές των τουριστών παγκοσμίως, το 2020. Ένα ουσιώδες κομμάτι στον τομέα των αερομεταφορών αποτελούν οι εταιρίες χαμηλού κόστους (low-cost carriers) που συνεισφέρουν κατά πολύ στην παγκόσμια τουριστική κίνηση και αναπτύσσονται συνεχώς παρά το ασταθές οικονομικό περιβάλλον και τα προβλήματα των μεγάλων αεροπορικών εταιριών. Αναλύονται τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά τους, οι συνήθεις πρακτικές τους, η πορεία τους διαχρονικά και εκτιμάται η μελλοντική επιρροή τους στην τουριστική κίνηση.
Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο προσεγγίζεται η συμβολή των αερομεταφορών στον Ελληνικό τουρισμό. Εισαγωγικά, εξετάζεται η γενικότερη συνεισφορά των μεταφορών στον Ελληνικό τουρισμό και μετέπειτα αναλύεται ο βαθμός που οι αερομεταφορές επηρεάζουν το Ελληνικό τουριστικό προϊόν. Παρουσιάζονται οι τελευταίες εξελίξεις, οι αδυναμίες των αερομετοφορών όσον αφορά τον Ελληνικό χώρο και δίνεται έμφαση στην συμβολή του αεροδρομίου του Ηρακλείου στην συνολική αεροπορική τουριστική ζήτηση της χώρας μας. Επιπροσθέτως, γίνεται προσπάθεια να εξηγηθεί ο ρόλος των εταιριών χαμηλού κόστους στην Ελληνική περιφέρεια, το εγχώριο καθεστώς της επίγειας εξυπηρέτησης και συγκρίνονται η Ελλάδα και οι ανταγωνίστριές της χώρες υποδοχής τουριστών ως προς τις αεροπορικές υπηρεσίες.
Τέλος, παρατίθενται τα συμπεράσματα που προκύπτουν από την ανωτέρω μελέτη και γίνονται προτάσεις για μεγαλύτερη μελλοντική συνεισφορά των αερομετοφορών στον Ελληνικό Τουρισμό, κάτι που θα δώσει νέες προοπτικές στη χώρα, πάρα τις παρούσες δυσχερείς οικονομικές συνθήκες.
