This diploma thesis was developed within the faculty of the Department of
Management of Organizations, Marketing and Tourism and aims to explore empirical
travel as a new product in the services offered by travel agencies in Thessaloniki. This
issue was chosen because empirical travel is a product that appears to be increasingly
demanding and is the starting point for research and reflection for many scientists of
various disciplines, teachers and students.
During my postgraduate course in the department, amongst others, we have
been taught a lot of courses on bearing capacity and the new products related to it, and
this is an indication of the need for a different approach to organized travel. Along
with my graduate in the department, I started working at the World Party Traveler as a
planning manager. The World Party Traveler is a tourist agency created, I would say
after a popular demand after the end of the World Party show. A show that was greatly
influenced by the fact that the trips took place in a different way, as the purpose of
each trip was to get to know the client, not the tourist, but the true everyday side of
each country. So, we realized there was a different way to travel. So people watching
the show wanted to travel in the same way, which means that experiential experiences
on a journey are all the more demanding.
So, with this job, I was given the opportunity to take advantage of the
knowledge I have gained over the years, to extend them and to explore the empirical
travel offered by the travel agencies in Thessaloniki.
To achieve this goal the work was divided into seven chapters.
In the first chapter, introductory information is given on tourism, on the
tourism industry in general and on travel agencies in particular. It mentions the
changes, the evolution, the crisis, but also the consequences they have suffered. There
are studied the types of tourism in Greece, the tourism industry as it exists today, its
functional structure and the branches of tourist activity. The second chapter explores the mass tourism, the tourist product and its
aspects. In addition, the importance of innovation in the tourism sector is analyzed and
some examples are given.
In the third chapter are studied creative tourism, empirical travel and how the
concepts of creation and experience are inextricably linked. Examples of experiential
trips are provided to better understand this special category of trips.
The fourth chapter analyzes bearing capacity, sustainability and ecotourism. In
addition, ecotourism in Brazil is analyzed, as it is important to understand the
experiential trip to the Amazon of Brazil and what prospects for increasing demand
for such a trip.
In the fifth chapter I focus on the profile of tourists who make experiential trips
and what their impact on them.
In the sixth chapter I quote introductory data on the methodology of the survey.
I analyze the methodology of my research, its purpose and its usefulness. However,
since I wanted to capture the current picture of the impact on tourism businesses, I
conducted a personal survey which was conducted between 10 January and 15 May
2019. I therefore addressed 5 owners and executives of the largest tourist offices in
Thessaloniki.
In the seventh chapter I record the results of the qualitative research I have
carried out.
Finally, in the eighth chapter I am referring to the general conclusions that I
obtained from the whole research of my dissertation thesis.
