The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the impact of the Folk-Dance festivals, socially, economically and culturally, as a cultural experience, on the development of cultural tourism, through the case study of the International Folk Festival of Dance & Music in Gefyra of Thessaloniki. First, the current study starts with the literature review, in which there is extensive analysis of the concepts of tourism, cultural tourism, traditional dance, memorable tourism experience and the case of festivals and their effects. Furthermore, there is the case study in which being analyzed the festival area, cultural club, and festival’s effects. Finally, the research method focuses in the methodological approach, limitations and data analysis. The main research method utilized is the qualitative and quantitative. The research was conducted through the interview process in which the participants were requested to answer specific questions in order to obtain the appropriate information for the organization of the festival. In addition, with the assistance of the questionnaires, the participants required to answer the questions regarding the effects of folk dance festivals, through the cultural experience they had experienced and how they were affected. The sample of the research consisted of 54 questionnaires, out of which 70.4% (38) were women and the remaining 29.6% (16) were men. Finally, the dissertation summarizes the findings from the research and provides suggestions for future research. According to the findings, the festival appears to have a positive implication to visitors and the local community. It is also noted that the cultural experience formulated during the festival, contributes positively to the attitude of individuals to participate and attend the festival again or any other similar and visit again the area of Gefyra and promoting it as a destination.
