Massage is worldwide known as the aggregate of methodological and scientific movements, which are applied to the human body for therapeutic, aesthetic and preventive purposes. The attempt of this thesis is to highlight the various techniques and treatments of ancient Greek massage and that of India, used not only for therapeutic causes but as a means for wellness and relaxation. From the very beginning, massage was associated with exercise, while later it became completely intertwined with medicine as a means of healing and rehabilitation of human health. The ultimate goals of this study, is the elevation of importance and usefulness of massage, in ancient Greek and India world, as well as the creation of a combined therapeutic protocol with influences and techniques from these two cultures. Achieving these goals would not have been possible without making a lot of research in this field as much as consulting Greek and foreign bibliography. The starting point of the present study is dedicated to create a historical context about massage’s evolutionary process over the centuries. Subsequently, the study focuses on the use of massage in ancient Greece. Since very ancient times, the importance of massage and its therapeutic effects on the neuromuscular and circulatory system had been emphasized through the research of the great healers and doctors of antiquity. In addition, in the present thesis is emphasized that the ayurvedic massage of India constitutes a kind of alternative treatment, integrated in the way of life promoted by the science of longevity. Finally, the thesis proposes a treatment protocol composed of a combination between Greek and Indian treatments based on the similarities and the differences between the two therapeutic massage methods.
