Introduction: Day surgery is a form of healthcare system characterized by surgical medical acts with diagnostic or / and therapeutic character , within a time limit of one day. The benefits of day surgery are unquestionable and can be distinguished in patient benefits, clinical benefits, economical and social benefits. Operations that can be performed as day surgeries are selected according to specific criteria and come from all surgical specialties. The selection of patients to undergo day surgery is a complex procedure that follows established protocols that define the surgical, clinical and social / psychological criteria for selecting patients. The units that host day surgery must have the proper structure, equipment and necessary scientific staff. While the adoption of day surgery institution reduces the cost of the health system, improves efficiency and contributes to the effective provision of health care, favoring the health policy of the countries in which our country is applied in the public sector, seems to be lagging behind.
The purpose of this research work is to study the necessity of applying the day surgery institution in a university hospital, exploring the perceptions of the hospital's surgical professionals (surgeons - anesthetists - nurses). Specifically, to study their view of the range of interventions that can be performed as day surgery in the specific health area at every surgical specialty , their view of the benefits of implementing the institution to all parties and structures, as well and the possibility of applying the institution to the particular hospital. Finally, to investigate whether or not health professionals intend to support such an effort in a tertiary hospital.
Methods : The research that was carried out was an exploratory, primary research, carried out by the distribution of anonymous closed-ended structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to all level health professionals (surgeons - anesthesiologists - nurses) of the university hospital surgical field (convenience sampling). 100 questionnaires were distributed out of which 90 were answered.
Results : All respondents agree that the day surgery facility is useful and that there will be benefits for the patient and the hospital, insurance providers and the Health System. They believe that a number of procedures performed with day care could be turned into day surgery. Although the overwhelming majority believe that human resources, facilities and equipment are not sufficient for the intended implementation of the institution, it declares its support for the implementation of the institution.
