In the last decades, more and more researchers pay special attention to the family’s role in the support and training of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The present study aimed to describe family adaptability, cohesion and satisfaction as well as sibling relationships in families with children with autism and typically developing siblings as they are presented through participants’ answers. More specifically, it examines differences in adaptability, cohesion and family satisfaction among the families with typically developing siblings and those without other children. It also analyzes the relationship between adaptability, cohesion, family satisfaction and sibling relationship and examines the possibility that sibling relationships depend on child’s age in autism spectrum disorder. The participants were 200 parents with children that belong to autism spectrum disorder. The questionnaires used to evaluate family’s characteristics included (a) the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES III), (b) the Family Satisfaction Scale (FSS), and (c) the Sibling Inventory of Behaviour (SIB).

| Abstract: | Τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες, όλο και περισσότεροι ερευνητές δίνουν ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στην ενεργή συμμετοχή της οικογένειας στην υποστήριξη και την εκπαίδευση του παιδιών με διαταραχές στο φάσμα του αυτισμού. Η παρούσα έρευνα είχε ως στόχο να περιγράψει την προσαρμοστικότητα, τη συνοχή και την οικογενειακή ικανοποίηση καθώς και το είδος των σχέσεων ανάμεσα στα αδέρφια, σε οικογένειες με παιδιά με αυτισμό και τυπικά αναπτυσσόμενα αδέρφια, όπως αυτά αποτυπώνονται μέσα από τις απαντήσεις των συμμετεχόντων. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η έρευνα επεδίωξε να εξετάσει την ύπαρξη διαφορών στην προσαρμοστικότητα, τη συνοχή και την οικογενειακή ικανοποίηση μεταξύ των οικογενειών με τυπικά αναπτυσσόμενα αδέρφια και εκείνων χωρίς άλλα παιδιά. Διερεύνησε επιπλέον, τη σχέση μεταξύ της προσαρμοστικότητας, της συνοχής, της οικογενειακής ικανοποίησης αλλά και των αδερφικών σχέσεων και έλεγξε την πιθανότητα εξάρτησης των αδελφικών σχέσεων από την ηλικία του παιδιού στο φάσμα του αυτισμού. Οι συμμετέχοντες ήταν 200 γονείς παιδιών που ανήκουν στο φάσμα του αυτισμού. Τα εργαλεία που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν προκειμένου να αξιολογηθούν τα χαρακτηριστικά της οικογένειας περιλαμβάνουν (α) την Κλίμακα Εκτίμησης της Προσαρμοστικότητας και Συνοχής της Οικογένειας (FACES III), (β) την Κλίμακα Οικογενειακής Ικανοποίησης (FSS) και (γ) την Καταγραφή Αδερφικών Συμπεριφορών (SIB).
