The artificial lake of Polifitou at the Regional Unit of Kozani, made in 1973 by the Public Power Corporation for the production of electric energy, has been barely utilized in the tourist industry. Despite the longtime efforts from public, private and non-profit organizations submitting proposals, its touristic growth is limited. The thesis investigates the factors that may further contribute to its promotion and tourism use, in the context of sustainable development with the implementation of innovative alternative forms of tourism. Our proposals for the promotion of Polifitou Lake as a tourist destination showcase the natural and cultural wealth of the region with particular emphasis on the “Senior Tourism” in the context of the so-called “Silver Economy” utilizing best practices that have been implemented in various European countries, adapted to the peculiarities of the local region. The Silver Economy is an interdisciplinary approach that is concerned with the assessment of the needs of the elderly, while creating products and services towards addressing the needs and demands of this particular social age group. In this regard special forms of tourism, favoured by the elderly, are enhanced. Apart from the cultural and religious tourism, other forms of tourism that are enhanced include the health and wellbeing tourism and the long stay winter tourism “snowbird”. The European Union’s 2014-2020 Cohesion Policy, gives particular emphasis on detecting issues faced by the elderly, promotes the Active and Healthy Ageing and the social inclusion of it through policies that respect the peculiarities of the target group. The sustainable and well-rounded approach lies in the objective and comprehensive representation of the current situation but also the redesigning of issues concerning the elderly as a spring board for sustainable tourist development, in the context of the social and financial well-being. The assessment of the different opinions, stances and general viewpoints of the local stakeholders in a region is crucial during all the stages of the decision making and implementation process. This topic is explored in the present thesis with semi-structured interviews that were conducted with participants from the local bodies that are involved in the tourist development of the wider region of the Polifitou lake. Senior tourism and alternative forms of independent living have become a significant part of the tourist industry. Why not embrace such form of tourism for our region too…?
