The present work was prepared in the framework of the study of the Strategic
Planning for the tourism development, promotion and marketing of the city of
Thessaloniki, which was undertaken by the TourLab research laboratory of the
International University of Greece, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Tourism
Organization. The work concerns Medical and Educational Tourism as alternative
tourism agencies. More specifically, the aim of the work is to investigate whether
medical and educational tourism can make a decisive contribution to the tourism
development and promotion of the city.
In the context of the elaboration of the strategic planning, a very organized and
disciplined effort was made from continuous consultations, with the participation of
all the involved bodies, in all the issues that concern the city of Thessaloniki. It was
deemed necessary to investigate all the sectors that directly or indirectly influence the
direction of the requested, in order to form a comprehensive framework of principles
which will in the future be the basis for the development of Thessaloniki as a popular
tourist destination with a strong brand name. It was studied whether it is important to
expand the activities of medical and educational tourism in the city of Thessaloniki, as
it will directly and indirectly affect its entire economic, social, political and cultural
course.
The method of approaching the issue was the research and analysis of Gap and Vrio,
and the main conclusions of the analyzes show that Thessaloniki has a number of
significant disadvantages, with high economic implications, of a non-permanent
nature, mainly concerning the field of state planning, lack of basic mainly transport,
water supply and wastewater management. An important disadvantage is the inability
to effectively protect investments, but also the lack of strategic planning. Significant
advantages, with significant economic implications, include a strong brand name as a
medical tourist destination, good health and service infrastructure, as well as
hospitality, significant biodiversity, strong cultural and tourist attractions, and a
number of appellation of origin products. , climatic conditions. Finally, the
intensification of the high level of research by universities and research centers of the
city, as well as the connection with university and research centers of other countries
is recorded as an advantage.
