Bibliography on Cyprus through Google Books and Internet Archive : 18th and 19th century in English, French and German

Abstract

The history of Cyprus is ancient and among the oldest in the world because of its strategic position. Cyprus is located in northeastern edge of the Eastern Mediterranean. Over the centuries the geographical position sometimes helped and sometimes harmed. Helped because it brought into direct contact with the major centers of civilization, Egypt, the Middle East and Mesopotamia. Conversely, however harmed it because became the reason to be mastered by all those who were powerful players in the region, the Assyrians, the Crusaders, the Turks and many others. The aim of the paper is to present an indicative bibliography of books which consist of three foreign languages (English, French and German) on the history of Cyprus in the 18th and 19th centuries. The search of the books was made through Google Books and Internet Archive. The Google Books is characterized as the largest online bookstore in the world, and the Internet Archive is aimed at creating an online free electronic library.

Η ιστορία της Κύπρου είναι αρχαιότατη και από τις παλαιότερες του κόσμου λόγω της στρατηγικής της θέση. Η Κύπρος βρίσκεται στη Β.Α. άκρη της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου. Στο πέρασμα των αιώνων η γεωγραφική της θέση άλλοτε τη βοήθησε κι άλλοτε την έβλαψε. Τη βοήθησε γιατί την έφερε σε άμεση επαφή με τα πρώτα μεγάλα κέντρα του πολιτισμού, την Αίγυπτο, τη Μέση Ανατολή και τη Μεσοποταμία. Αντιθέτως όμως την έβλαψε γιατί έγινε αιτία να κατακτηθεί απ’ όλους όσοι έγιναν ισχυροί παράγοντες στην περιοχή, τους Ασσύριους, τους Σταυροφόρους, τους Τούρκους αλλά και πολλούς άλλους. Στόχος της εργασίας είναι η παρουσίαση μιας ενδεικτικής βιβλιογραφίας βιβλίων τα οποία αποτελούνται από τρεις ξένες γλώσσες (αγγλικά, γαλλικά, γερμανικά) με θέμα την ιστορία της Κύπρου τον 18ο και 19ο αιώνα. Η αναζήτηση των βιβλίων έγινε μέσω Google Books και Internet Archive. Το Google Books χαρακτηρίζεται ως το μεγαλύτερο ηλεκτρονικό βιβλιοπωλείο του κόσμου, ενώ το Internet Archive έχει ως στόχο τη δημιουργία μιας ελεύθερης ηλεκτρονικής βιβλιοθήκης στο διαδίκτυο.
