Burnout and job satisfaction in teachers affects both their personal and professional
lives with an immediate impact on their productivity and the country's educational
system (Hughes, 2001), both in general and special education. The purpose of this study
was to investigate differences in burnout and job satisfaction in teachers of primary and
secondary education schools of general and special education in the Regional Unit of
Serres. Moreover, differences in gender were investigated. This survey included 148
teachers, 75 in general and 73 in special education, 64 male and 84 female. The
assessment tool was a questionnaire including a) the demographic characteristics b)
Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey, M.B.I.-E.S (Maslach, Jackson & Leiter, 1996) and
c) close type questions for teachers job satisfaction. Results showed that burnout levels
in teachers were low, however general education teachers had higher burnout levels than
those in special education. Job satisfaction levels were high for all teachers and special
education teachers were found more satisfied. Gender did not seem to affect any results
but females were more burned out and less satisfied than male teachers. Therefore it is
confirmed that higher burnout levels reduce job satisfaction in teachers.
Further similar research is needed in other parts of Greece in order to contact
comparative studies and reach with comprehensive conclusions
