Ο ιός των ανθρώπινων θηλωμάτων (Bachelor thesis)
Σωτηριάδου, Ελένη
Human papilloma virus research has been launched for many years. It is now widespread that it causes damage to various parts of the body. The human body also has the potential to protect and deal with the virus and sometimes it can affect seriously, as there is an increased chance of precancerous or cancerous conditions. Importantly, progress has been made in detecting the virus through specific methods that are constantly evolving over the years. This has contributed not only to understanding the transmission of the virus but also to proper prevention through appropriate vaccines. Because, according to Hippocrates, «prevention is better than treatment" .Finally, the treatment of the virus varies according to the lesions that have been caused. More specifically, the study deals with the historical chapter of the human papilloma virus starting in 1895. In the second chapter there is a full report for its structure and its harmfulness to humans through certain genes that are comprised, the immune response of the person being infected and the modes of transmission. Then, the clinical symptoms of the virus are investigated, not only in the genital area but also in various parts of the body. The lesions induced may be either low (LGSIL) or high risk (HGSIL) which can lead to precancerous or cancerous conditions. The fourth chapter covers the methods by which virus detection has been achieved at cellular and molecular level. Finally, a very important role is played by the prevention of the virus through vaccination involving both the female and the male population, but also the appropriate treatment which varies according to the degree of the lesions that have been created and whether the infection is persistent.
