This thesis was conducted for the Postgraduate Studies Program "Administration of Tourism Enterprises and Organizations", of the Department of Business Administration of the Alexander Technological Educational Institute (Α.Τ.Ε.Ι) of Thessaloniki and aspires to explore the potential of sustainable tourism development. Specifically, the aim of this Diploma Thesis is to study the implementation of sustainability through the sport tourism, in the area of Lefkada. Initially, the particular thesis is divided into two main parts, the theoretical background, where is carried out a bibliography review of everything that is related to tourism and the specific part, where a research is extended, by giving the information of methodology, the research tool, the results and the conclusions. The first introductive chapter determines the meanings of "tourism". Through an overview in the relevant bibliography, different definitions of tourism are enumerated, as well as the main features and its categories. Moreover, the alternate forms of tourism are analyzed, by giving emphasis at the athletic tourism and its articles. Subsequently, in the second chapter are presented in detail the principles of sustainable tourism, such as the carrying capacity, the biodiversity, the transfrontier responsibility, the critical natural capital, etc. The third chapter gives emphasis at the effects of the phenomenon of tourism, which are categorized into economical, social and environmental. In the fourth chapter we meet the island of Lefkada. Therefore, the geographic location, the climate as well as the economy of the island are analyzed. In addition, the types of tourism are listed, which are being developed in the island, such as natural, cultural and archaeological tourism. Finally, there are also presented the most basic touristic sports activities, which are taking place on the island of Lefkada, recently. The fifth chapter is constituted by the research methodology. The inquiring purpose and the target are determined as well the research questions are placed. Method analysis is clarified, which was used for the implementation of the research and are also specified the ways of conducting it. The sixth chapter records the results of the research, which are conducted through a computer program by giving the particular data tables, the charts and the graphs. Finally, the conclusions of the diploma thesis are given, where a discussion of the results is initially carried out, by concentrating the research results, emphasizing the agreement or not of the sample number. Moreover, the main conclusion is being presented, which shows the consensus of the plurality of the sample, regarding the potential of the island of Lefkada for tourism development and consequently the development of sustainability. The Athletic Tourism is considered to be one of the main means to achieve tourism development, since Lefkada has a wide variety of specifications and capabilities for the "best" exploitation and promotion of sport tourism for its benefit
