In this particular senior thesis, the new-found technologies in the field of library automation will be researched and presented. Next generation integrated library systems (ILS) will be presented in a detailed way. The background development of integrated library systems throughout the years as long with the new trends will be displayed alongside with the ongoing user feedback that affect program functionality. The open access movement will be introduced as a general incident in the world wide web and its relation with library integrated systems. Finishing this thesis, the presentation of Evergreen, an open access integrated library system of the so-called next generation systems with more than 270 libraries using it at its fullest, will take place.
