Συστήματα πέδησης αυτοκινήτου (Bachelor thesis)
Μαυρομμάτης, Παντελεήμων/ Νέιρος, Ραφαήλ
Initially the first chapter refers generally to the braking systems of the car and the historical
brake review and their significant development. Then reference will be made to the hydraulic
system and disc brakes, which are the most used brakes. Technology has evolved further by
making it safer to drive with electronically controlled systems for which more extensive
control is being carried out in the second chapter. There are also different braking devices
between the front and rear axles. Air brakes are mainly used in heavy-duty vehicles due to
their heavy weight and the force required for braking would not only be possible from the
driver's pedal force such as passenger cars. For this reason, the brakes have been applied to
such heavy vehicles and braking is achieved by an external source of air supply, that is to say
compressor producing compressed air, and the driver simply allows the air to flow to the
brakes via pedal and manual valves.
In the second chapter we analyze the auxiliary braking systems. All auxiliary braking systems,
namely ABS, ESC, ASR, EDL, etc. were implemented to effectively contribute to the active
safety of cars in order to reduce road accidents.
Finally, in the third and final chapter we mainly describe the disc brakes, since they are the
most used ones nowadays. The different types of discs are presented which, depending on the
type and age of the car, are applicable. Also, the main feature of the disc brakes is the material
of the discs as it plays an important role in the braking behavior since it determines important
braking factors. The pads are also the brake components that are replaced after they are
damaged during braking. There are some types of paddles mentioned in the work analysis,
depending on their friction material. Finally, brake fluid is the force transfer medium from the
driver's pedal to the brakes. These are standard liquids from international standardization
organizations and have specific names according to their technical characteristics
