Medical plants are determined by the presence of active ingredients that have a normal effect on human and animal beings. A typical example of medical plants is hypericum (Hypericum Perforatum) and rosemary which have a wide range of active substances with a wide field of use in pharmacology as well as in cosmetic and aromatherapy. Among the active substances of hypericum are naphthodianthrons with hypericin being the most important member of this family, phloroglucinols, the main member of which is hyperforin and flavonoids. In addition, terpenoids are found in the plant's essential oil. The most important actions of these substances include antidepressant, neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. Hypericin, apart from its antibacterial action has a remarkable anti-cancer effect due to its photodynamic properties. Because of this properties, high concentrations of hypericin can cause dermal phototoxicity. Moreover, interactions with certain drugs have been mentioned. The most representative classes of compounds in Rosmarinus Officinalis extracts are diterpenoids and flavonoids (flavones, flavanones and flavonols) with at least 57 identified compounds. In addition, 63 different compounds have been isolated from the volatile fraction of the plant. The active ingredients of Rosmarinus Officinalis include: α-pinene, 1,8-quinole, camphor, rosmanol, isosporanol, rosmarinic acid, carnosol, carnosic acid, borneol and α-terpineol. Ingredients of the plant have been found to show activity in the central nervous system characterized by memory enhancement and neuroprotective action. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-UV effect have also been reffered.
