ABSTRACT This work aimedto studythe validity of the Survey of Autonomic Symptoms (SAS), translated into Greek, for autonomic neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus. The development of the Greek version of SAS followed specific guidelines, to ensure the validity of the translation and to make sure that it would remain simple, clear, easy to use and understandable by Greek patients, equally well as the corresponding English version. The Greek version also focused on accurate assessment of the symptoms of the autonomic nervous system in patients with diabetes. The questionnaire was delivered to 40 patients with diabetes mellitus, to assess its validity. Our results indicated that the Greek version of SAS is easy for the patient to complete. However,some changes in the phrasing of questions for the assessment of the symptoms of sudomotor system are needed to increase understandability by patients and validity of their responses. Finally, future surveys could assess the validity and reliability of the Greek version of the SAS questionnaire in larger populations and using statistical methods.
