Introduction: Diabetes constitutes a common disease, whose complications affect the life outcome and quality of the patients. Diet is able to contribute in a positive way to the process of the disease. This research aims to expand the rate of influence in adopting the the method of equivalents on patients with diabetes type 1 in the adjustment of glucose based on specific parameteres refered in bibliography (levels of HbA1c, measuring frequency of sugar levels, observation of body weight, physical exercise, self-efficacy, use of method as diet tool, consumption frequency of fruits, vegetables, legumes, dairy products with low fat, meat, desserts, nourishments with highglycemic index). Methodology: A sectional research was conducted on random population in the prefectures of Kozani and Thessaloniki in order to evaluate the level of knowledge concerning the treatment of diabetes type 1 through nutritional management, specifically with the exchange method. Seventy patients were asked to answer a questionnaire already tested (47 questions). 7 questionnaires were rejected because two of them weren’t whole completed and five patients weren’t taught the method. Results: Gender, origin city, age and educational level are not related with the learning of the exchange’ method. The progress of the disease through the years affects the diet habbits and the caloric intake. The positive effect of physical exercise on HbA1c was confirmed. On the other hand the positive effect of the method in the glycemic control, with HbA1c indicator, was not proved. Conclusions: The exchange method it’s the most complete and detailed way of nutrition education. Perhaps the results of this research can be useful for health professionals who are helpers both in education and management of the disease.
