Hypericum Perforatum: ο ρόλος του στην υγεία και την αισθητική. (Bachelor thesis)

There is a wide range of agents in the environment which can be employed in many domains for their beneficial properties. The flora of Greece is rich in common and endemic plants which have such properties. One of these plants is hypericum.
The genus Hypericum belongs to the family of Clusiaceae, which consists of more than 150 herb, shrub and brushwood species. One of the most well-known and widely utilized species is the Hypericum Perforatum.
More specifically, Hypericum Perforatum (Hyperion perforated) or St. John's wort, as it is commonly known in Europe, is one of the oldest medicinal plants used in folk medicine across many different cultures for healing, anti-inflammatory and antidepressant purposes. Its extracts constitute pharmaceutical products that are marketed as supplements or drugs for mild and moderate depression disorders. The flavonoids, phenolic acids, naphthodianthrones and phloroglucinols are the main compounds which are found in a particularly high proportion in herbal extracts.
The present thesis was composed in order to reveal the usefulness of this therapeutic herb not only in the pharmaceutical industry but also in cosmetology and everyday life.
The most important species of hypericum are also discussed in chapter along with the main active constituents it contains and the ways in which these constituents act to produce its beneficial effects. Moreover, all the possible preparations that can be produced from the extract, the leaves and the body of the plant are extensively mentioned.
Finally, reference is made to the main contraindications that exist regarding the plant itself, as well as those generated by interacting with other secondary factors
