The characteristics of the anxiety disorders and depression were described. Expected mood changes during pregnancy and the characteristics of perinatal mental disorders were reported. Risk factors concerning the occurrence of perinatal mental disorders were analyzed. Statistical data about the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder in the perinatal period was presented, followed by the presentation of the association and prevalence of depression in the perinatal period. Suggestions about the prevention and treatment of these disorders were made and information about the use of pharmacological treatment was provided.
