Ψυχοκοινωνικές επιπτώσεις σακχαρώδη διαβήτη στην νηπιακή και βρεφική ηλικία (Bachelor thesis)

Our scientific essay is entitled “The psychological consequences of diabetes melitus in new born s and infants” The reason for choosing this topic was our willing to investigate psychological and sociological impact of this serious decease in this particularly sensitive age group, what is diabetes melitus and in which ways the nursing personal may act in order to prepare and strength patients and their families for the new situation of being diabetic and living with it. Initially we define what health and what decease is and describe the the basic models of perception of health and decease, the biomedical as well the psychosocilogical. In order to understand the impact of chronical decease such diabetes melitus in people we define what chronical decease is and what is quality of life. Quality of life also contains persons functionality, well being, psychological status and experience of life. As long as it concerns diabetes melitus type I, the diabetes when there is decreased or absence of insulin secretion,the consequences on new born s and infants are serious because they result in new life frame for the patient and his family and establishing a permanent relation of child-decease-drug administration-medical and nursing personnel. The infant might have feelings guilt, shame, anxiety, stress and despair. The family often feels afraid, shammed and in vain trying. The role of family is the management of the decease in physical, psychological and social level to adapt in the new circumstances and to undertake the every day care of the child. The intervention suggested in the family environment aims in preventing and in healing. Continuous updating, training and active participation of the entire family on facing and self treating the decease is necessary. As long as it concerns the school environment it must be close cooperation with the family and the medical personal in order to secure the smooth integration and incorporation of the diabetic kid. Finally the role of the nurse is fundamental in both practical and educational level as long as in acception and building a relation of trusting.
