By a UN decision, 2017 was declared "International Sustainable Tourism Year" for development in recognition of the important role of sustainable tourism as a positive mean of eradicating poverty, protecting the environment, improving the quality of life and contributing to dimension of sustainable development.
Taking this decision in mind and wishing to highlight the benefits of implementing sustainable development policies, we have developed the present work which examines the sector of sustainable tourism in Northern Greece.
Initially, the issue of tourism is presented and its relation to the natural environment, economy and the society of a destination is analyzed. The concept, forms and values of sustainable tourism are then studied, while examining the importance of support and the role of governments. Then the question of the image of a tourist destination and how it can affect and influence a visitor is approached. An attempt is made to record the current situation in Greece on issues of sustainable tourism, while at the same time there is a reference to various initiatives and actions taking place in areas of Northern Greece. Finally, our conclusions and suggestions are presented after having analyzing all of the above.

| Abstract: | Με απόφαση των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, το 2017 ανακηρύχθηκε "Διεθνές Έτος Βιώσιμου Τουρισμού" για την ανάπτυξη σε αναγνώριση του σημαντικού ρόλου του βιώσιμου τουρισμού ως θετικού μέσου για την εξάλειψη της φτώχειας, την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος, τη βελτίωση της ποιότητας ζωής και τη συμβολής της στις διαστάσεις της βιώσιμης ανάπτυξη.
Με γνώμονα αυτή την απόφαση και θέλοντας να αναδείξουμε τα ευεργετήματα που προκύπτουν από την εφαρμογή αειφορικών πολιτικών ανάπτυξης εκπονήσαμε την παρούσα εργασία η οποία εξετάζει τον τομέα του βιώσιμου τουρισμού στην Β. Ελλάδα.
Αρχικά παρουσιάζεται το ζήτημα του τουρισμού και αναλύεται η σχέση του με το φυσικό περιβάλλον, την οικονομία και την κοινωνία ενός προορισμού. Στην συνέχεια μελετάται η έννοια, οι αξίες και οι μορφές του βιώσιμου τουρισμού εξετάζοντας παράλληλα τον ρόλο των κυβερνήσεων και την σημασία της υποστήριξης τους. Έπειτα προσεγγίζεται το ζήτημα της εικόνας ενός τουριστικού προορισμού και πως αυτή μπορεί να επιδράσει και να επηρεάσει έναν επισκέπτη. Στην συνέχεια γίνεται μια απόπειρα καταγραφής της υφιστάμενης κατάστασης στην Ελλάδα σε θέματα βιώσιμου τουρισμού ενώ παράλληλα γίνεται μνεία διαφόρων πρωτοβουλιών και δράσεων που λαμβάνουν χώρα σε περιοχές της Β. Ελλάδας. Τέλος παρουσιάζονται τα συμπεράσματα και οι προτάσεις μας έπειτα από την ανάλυση όλων των παραπάνω.
