School units are organized groups with characteristics similar to those of society. Therefore, in order for a school community to function smoothly, the necessary conditions must be in place to enable it to deliver a quality educational work.
The “heroic” leadership, as a model of administration, is characterized as distinctive as each group is guided with complete integrity. The “heroic” leader has all the responsibility of his/her team, sees the problems directly and has the right solutions ready. The results of a series of studies clearly show the social, psychological and physical benefits of heroic leadership.
At the same time, according to most of the teachers of the research conducted, the characteristics of an effective leader are basically empathy, research and collaboration skills, and the provision of the ability of colleagues to participate in the administration. Also, it is equally important for teachers to acquire knowledge, to be provided with incentives for self-improvement, as well as self-action opportunities by taking responsibility for their actions.
With regard to Total Quality Management, studies make its application necessary, according to the modern requirements of the 21st century. Through the Total Quality Management and the implementation of the quality standards it adopts, an internal guidance system is built, which feeds the educational institution with the appropriate elements to check whether its operations are performing successfully.
This study investigates the degree of effectiveness and functionality of heroic leadership practices, as well as the compatibility of this school leadership model with Total Quality Management. Moreover, the importance of the role of the principal in both the smooth and successful functioning of the school and in the effective communication of all the actors involved in the educational process is highlighted.
