This diploma thesis deals with the design of historical cultural routes in the region of
Karditsa, based on the local cultural heritage of the Occupation, the Resistance and
the Civil War. The Cultural routes are structured tours based on a specific thematic
context. It is one of the main tools for the promotion and interpretation of cultural
heritage.
The study includes a bibliographic review on the subject of the routes and on any
other element is related to. Besides, it tries to find out whether the region of Karditsa
can rely on the cultural reserve of this period to develop cultural tourism. The choice
of the specific subject of diploma thesis came after the recording of the tangible and
intangible cultural heritage of the period 1941-1949 of the region of Karditsa. Then,
the desire to explore and exploit the particular cultural reserve was created in order to
revitalize the local economy. The suggested way is through cultural tourism. The
originality of the specific subject lies in the fact that it has not happened such thing in
the past. This is evidenced by the extensive research which done for the purposes of
this work.
The dissertation begins with a bibliographic review of the concepts of dissertation in
order to give a complete view. These are the concept of tangible and intangible
cultural heritage, cultural tourism and cultural routes. The concept of routes has
become more extensive report because it is the main axis of the study. At the end of
this first chapter, they are presented three successful cases of cultural routes around
the world.
The second chapter presents a description of the current situation of the region of
Karditsa. Furthermore, there is a review of the local history which starts from the
prehistoric years until the end of the civil war. At this part, it is made an extended
reference to the historical period between1941-1949.
The third chapter focuses on the presentation of the five historical cultural routes.
Each route includes areas with rich in material and intangible heritage from 1941-
1949. The places are located on the routes according to their geographical succession.
Furthermore, each region is connected with the rest of its cultural stock. Τhe purpose
of these routes is to be a complete tourist product. For this reason, they are
accompanied by maps and other useful tourist information, such as hospitality,
catering, useful telephone numbers etc.

In the fourth chapter is presented the research methodology that followed for the
implementation of the study.
The dissertation ends with the presentation of conclusions which answer the queried
research questions. At the same time they are outlined some suggestions for the
implementation of the main purpose of the study. All of these aim at providing new
data to people who are involved with the field of culture and tourism and exploiting
them during the shaping of future strategic planning for tourism.
This diploma thesis was based on a primary research with the on-site observation and
experience of the cultural routes by the researcher. It also relied on secondary research
with a review of previous scientific articles, studies, books and other bibliographic
sources on these research topics.
Through this process, they were emerged the following research questions:
1. What are the cultural routes?
2. What is the process of planning historical cultural routes?
3. Can cultural routes attract tourists of special interest?
4. Can cultural routes be a complete tourist product?
The final aim of this thesis is to highlight an untapped piece of local cultural heritage
and transform it into a tourist product that will lead to the development of cultural
tourism in the area of Karditsa.
