Workplace bullying is a worldwide extremely worrying phenomenon with negative
effects on the personal and professional status of employees. The sector of education is a
high-risk professional domain regarding workplace harassment with corrosive consequences
on the proper functioning of schools. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree
and frequency of occurrence of the phenomenon in public secondary education teachers, its
basic forms, main directions and causal factors as well as its impacts on teachers’
psychosomatic health and professional status. Another goal of the study is to investigate the
possible correlation of workplace bullying with the leadership style adopted by the school
Principal and his / her effectiveness.
Based on the results of the survey, 19.4% of the sample are victims of occasional
harassment, while 7.8% are victims of serious workplace bullying. Negative attitudes are
aimed at the employee's professional status, mainly stem from the Principal, and are attributed
to inadequate performance of his / her administrative duties. This kind of behavior results in
labor exhaustion, workplace stress, isolation and thoughts of leaving their jobs. Correlation of
the phenomenon with demographic factors such as gender, age, academic level or type of
school was not observed. However, there was evidence of a statistically significant negative
correlation of transformational leadership style with the occurrence of workplace bullying,
and of a positive one with passive or laissez-faire leadership style.
