Sustainable Tourism and the restoration of Victoria Falls on the world map through a Tourism Destination Management(DMO). (Master thesis)

Mwawoneka, Hazel

Having tourism as the economy's backbone in Victoria Falls and beyond, the world is getting more and more aware of the environmental problems surrounding us and the impact that these problems have on the nature and its preservation for future generations. Regardless of all this Victoria Falls for the past couple of years has been fast disappearing from the world map as a destination and a solution has to be found. It is quite disheartening to see such a wonder slowly fade away. In light of the increase in environmental protection awareness and the need to preserve the environment for future generations, there has been a unilateral call for the practice of Sustainable Tourism and this does not mean any less for Victoria Falls. It is the duty of not only the government, tourism businesses, the local residents but also and the tourists to protect such a wonder. Victoria Falls is a destination that must be preserved for there are only seven natural wonders in the world and the only one of its kind. This research is set out to look at the implementation of the eight basic principles of Sustainable tourism in Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. It will enlighten what the area has achieved to date and further more give recommendations on the basic principles that can be applied to reach the goal of practicing responsible tourism. In addition, this research seeks to review if the tourism businesses in Victoria would want a Tourism Destination Management Organization. It will outline the suitable Destination Management Organization for Victoria Falls that practices sustainable tourism. It will highlight on which points it can focus on regarding the destination and how best it can help Victoria Falls to develop sustainably.
