Overview: Technical and Vocational Education in Europe is considered equivalent to the
General Education in Europe, unlike Greece where despite the efforts made during the last
years remains unattractive, that resulting in the students of Technical and Vocational
Lyceums being much fewer in comparison to General Lyceums.
Aim: The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the attitude and beliefs of the
Junior High School students and their parents regarding Technical and Vocational Lyceums
and the potential of their studying in one.
Material-method:The sample of the study consisted of 80 parents and 80 students of the 2nd
and 3rd grade of Junior High School from two urban and two semi-urban regions of the
country. For the data collection, two separate forms of recording the sociodemographic data
of both groups were used, as well as two specially designed for the purposes of this study
questionnaires to record the attitudes and beliefs of both groups regarding Technical and
Vocational Education. For the statistical analysis of the data the statistical package SPSS v. 17
was used. The statistical significance was set at p<0.05.
Results:The majority of the participants prefer the General Lyceum as their school of choice.
The most important reasons were that the quality of study is better and that it offers the
opportunity to access better universities which lead to jobs with better financial rewards. The
participants’ knowledge regarding Technical and Vocational Education was poor. The
students were better informed by their teachers than their parents were; with the teachers’
encouragement though both students and their parents would consider Technical and
Vocational Lyceum as a possible choice. The belief that the students with lower grades as
well as those interested in learning a craft prefer Technical and Vocational Education is
prevalent. High grades atJunior High School was found to be a negative predictive factor for
selecting Technical and Vocational Lyceum as well as for their willingness to be get more
information about it. Women, residence in an urban area, negative attitude towards Technical
and Vocational Education as well as high grades were also found to be negative predictive
factors for selecting Technical and Vocational Lyceums.
Conclusions:Better information to both students and parents by teachers themselves may
enhance theattractiveness of Technical and Vocational Lyceums.
