Eating disorders are psychogenic disorders which can lead individuals to the
adoption of strict and rigid dietary rules and above all, to excessive dieting, creating
serious health complications that can lead to death. Psychological intervention
requiring medical follow-up of the patient is necessary in order to face them as long
as the contribution of a nutritionist to restore their physical health and weight.
Sleep apnea is a respiratory disorder characterized by short sleep breaks. It
concerns those who snore loud, are overweight, have high blood pressure or some
physical anomaly in the nose or in parts of the upper airway with consequences from
annoying to life threatening. To deal with it, depending on the patient's case,
individual behavioral therapy, physical or mechanical therapy or surgery is
suggested.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the causes and factors that contribute to
the occurrence of these conditions. The evaluation of the results was carried out
using specific validated questionnaires and was investigated the correlation of
characteristics with the Body Mass Index, gender but also between them.
The EAT-26 (Eating Attitudes Test) questionnaire was used for the detection of a
high risk of eating disorder and the Berlin Questionnaire-Sleep Apnea for the
investigation of sleep apnea.
The sample comprised 101 individuals living in Kozani, Thessaloniki and Crete and
the age range was 35-65 years. In the majority of the sample, according to the body
mass index, normal body weight was observed, followed by a slight difference in
excess body weight (overweight). First class obesity but also second class obesity
were also found in both sexes and a small percentage of underweight women.
The results of the EAT-26 questionnaire showed that women are at a higher risk of
having an eating disorder with 24% over men at 12% and the age range was 35-60
years.
Berlin Questionnaire-Sleep Apnea showed that of the total population women had
a higher risk of sleep apnea 16%, compared with 12% for men, and their age range
was 41-65 years.
A combination of eating disorder and sleep apnea was found in 3 people.
