This study examines the attitude of the residents of Trigono and North Evros towards the ecotourism context. Part of this area is included in the Natura 2000 European Ecological Network and is a key geopolitical point of Greece. The reason the site was chosen is that it is ideal for the development of mild and alternative forms of tourism. The purpose of the research is to investigate the extent to which locals have positive attitudes towards ecotourism and the fundamental axes of the ecotourism framework. For this purpose, a survey was carried out on a sample of residents of Trigono and North Evros in the period January - March 2019. Descriptive statistics was used and the research tool was a questionnaire based on a prior survey in the region of North Karpathos. The results were statistically analyzed by the program SPSS 20. The modules examined were about the demographic characteristics of the residents and their views on environmental conservation, environmental education and local community participation and empowerment. Based on the results of the survey, residents appeared to agree with the basic principles of ecotourism as they showed a high degree of awareness of environmental issues in the area and recognized the need for environmental protection and education on ecotourism activities. In addition, residents have taken a positive view of ecotourism initiatives, which aim at empowering the local community and at promoting a sustainable development in their area. Gender did not appear to have a significant impact on residents' perceptions, while there was a statistically significant difference in most of the responses regarding the age, education level and income of the residents. The present study concluded that there is a need for appropriate infrastructure in the region as to develop ecotourism activities based on the natural environment and its cultural tradition. In addition, it was found that systematic environmental and tourism education of local residents is necessary. Finally, there was a need to empower the local community through more participatory decision-making processes as well as the need for more general support from the state authorities in the area.
