In the field of Administration in Education, great importance has been given to
leadership, as well as to the importance of integrating the emotional factor into all its
forms and levels.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of emotional intelligence
on leadership and decision-making abilities by leaders. An attempt is made to explore
the relationship of emotional intelligence and leadership to the characteristics of the
unit manager and how this influences decision making. In particular, teachers' views
on whether and to what extent the managers of their teaching units express combined
features of emotional intelligence and transformational leadership and how this
translates into decision-making are examined.
The level of emotional intelligence of school unit managers as well as the
strategies of the transformative leadership they use for decision-making, according to
the results of the quantitative study, was high. The characteristics of transformational
leadership and emotional intelligence were found to be statistically significant in
decision-making.
The first chapter deals extensively with emotional intelligence. Definitions,
conceptual approach, refer to models of emotional intelligence, business research and
education The second chapter refers to leadership in general with the most representative
definitions, and in particular transformational leadership. Reference is made to the
charismatic leader, the implementation of transformational leadership in education,
but also to his relation to emotional intelligence as well as to the research carried out
in this field.
In the third chapter there is a theoretical approach to decision making in the
context of transformational leadership, but also the role of emotional intelligence as
recorded through relevant research.
The fourth chapter contains the research section. The cases are initially
formulated and the application of the survey is followed by a questionnaire. The
questionnaire is structured in four sections. In the first section on Transformational
Leaders, teachers and managers, using 2 structured questionnaires of closed questions,
are asked to judge to what extent they express traits of transformative leadership
(intellectual stimulation, idealized influence, inspired motivation, personalized
interest), teachers with heterosexual references to the director their school unit,
managers with self-reports. The second section concerns decision making, the third is
Emotional Intelligence and its Scale (self-observation, empathic use of emotions and
emotions management) and the fourth the demographic and professional
characteristics of teachers and managers.
In the fifth chapter, conclusions, research constraints and proposals are made.
The methodology used is the review of the literature, published articles of the
last decade, which were found in electronic databases and are written in English and
Greek. The investigation was carried out by quantitative research, using the Bass &
Avolio (2004) specialized questionnaire (MLQ-5x), and for Emotional Intelligence
the Wong & Law (2002) emotional skill scale was translated into Greek language by
Kafetsios and Zampetakis (2008) and is the tool in this research. A questionnaire was
included to investigate decision-making and a social and demographic feature survey.
The questionnaires were sent electronically, to a sample of 110 teachers and 50
School Headmasters of Primary and Secondary Education in the Prefecture of Serres.
The analysis and statistical processing of the findings was carried out with the help of
the statistical tool SPSS.
