Tourism creates new jobs but can also overcome a place’s carrying capacity, in its mass
form. Gastronomical tourism is related to food and eating experiences that take place
when people travel. It is also called food tourism and culinary tourism. This type of
tourism is not only associated with eating and drinking, but also taking part in events that
range from food festivals to farm visits. Those activities are categorized as part of
cultural tourism. Authentic and well prepared food can be a magnet for visitors to a
destination. The gastronomy is associated with the enjoyment of good food and drink. It
is the art of creating experiences and feelings, making the visitor a part of the culture of
the destination. Local dishes have a great influence on tourists’ decisions when choosing
their vacation destination. Quality gastronomy is a decisive factor in a visitor’s
satisfaction, as it generates a lasting memory about the experience lived by the tourist.
Gastronomic tourism has a positive impact on the economy, occupation and local
heritage, because tourists are eager to get to know not only the local food but also to its
origin and how it is produced. Greece has a long tradition of local cuisines, with
interesting flavors and is famous around the world. Regrettably, few of Greek restaurants
offer authentic traditional national or local cuisine. The problem is more heightened in
tourist areas. Food extensively plays a part in the tourists’ general impression of and
satisfaction with a destination
