The subject of this dissertation is the study of a form of tourism that is well known abroad but is an unknown aspect of tourism in Greece. Dark Tourism is a new concept for Greece that has begun to develop in recent years. Though unknown to many Greeks, it has invaded the foreign tourism industry and it brings many profits to the tourism economy. Apart from the simple reference to this form of tourism, more specifically, an attempt is made to prove that Thessaloniki has monuments that could support the Dark Tourism. However, the dissertation is restricted only to the listing of the cemeteries and the areas where tombs found, which are non-negotiable supporters of Dark Tourism. Apart from the listing of such fields, seven questionnaires were produced, which were addressed to tourism specialists and which aimed to capture the view of these people regarding this form of tourism in Thessaloniki. The purpose of this research was not the comparison and for this reason, questionnaires were few in number and each one different from the other (few questions coincided). The thesis develops in five distinct sections and through the deductive method it unfolds from a more general concept to the more specific, so: The first section deals with tourism and specific forms of tourism in general, but without emphasizing to the city of Thessaloniki, in order to understand the concept of tourism, its importance and its evolution. The second section focuses on the concept of Dark Tourism and the importance of memory. More specifically, it analyzes the content of this form of tourism, its diachronicity, its benefits and its typology, yet again there is no specific reference in the city. The third part is dealing with the Dark tourism in the city of Thessaloniki, but initially there it a laconic reference to the history of Thessaloniki, its tourism as well as its cultural character. Finally, the question arises as to why this form of tourism has not been developed in Thessaloniki. In the fourth section, a broad listing of all the cemeteries and areas where tombs found is provided. The list only concerns the cemeteries and the graves that exist in the wider area of Thessaloniki. The fifth section concerns the research of the dissertation, through the questionnaires that were answered by seven employees of the tourism industry. The questionnaires are listed, just as they were written (in Greek), as well as their conversion into English. Afterwards, there is the analysis of the questionnaires, as well as the research gap of the thesis. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the opportunities that this form of tourism could have in Thessaloniki. It is being examined if there are monuments in the city that can support the Dark Tourism and why they have remained in obscurity. Finally, through the questionnaires, the views of tourism specialists, concerning the Dark Tourism, are clarified and it is very interesting to see how they confront with this form of tourism generally but also in the city of Thessaloniki. So, the questions that will be of particular concern to us are: • What is the Dark Tourism? • What are the benefits of this form of tourism? • Can Thessaloniki support this form of tourism? • What do tourist experts think about the Dark Tourism in Thessaloniki? • Efforts are being made to promote the monuments that are related to Dark Tourism? The final aim of the above dissertation is the disclosure of the cultural activities of the city which offers a wide range of cultural options and which is characterized by a multicultural entity with an important history.
