Introduction: The training and subsequent self-management and self-care regarding diabetes mellitus are important factors in achieving euglycemia, delaying the onset of complications and improving the quality of life of patients with diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study is to investigate and evaluate patients' knowledge of diabetes as well as the level of its management (exercise, diet, medication, acute complications). Materials & Methods: This study involved 100 patients with type I & type II diabetes who where being monitored in outpatient diabetes clinics at a hospital in Thessaloniki and the hospital of Ptolemaida. The survey took place between March and July 2019. Knowledge and self-management were assessed using the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire and the Diabetes Care Profile questionnaire (DCP) of the University of Michigan Research Center. Demographics, anthropometric data and laboratory results (HbA1c, lipid profile, renal function) were also used. Results: Our study showed that the level of knowledge concerning diabetes is average for both sexes. In addition, compliance to the recommendations regarding diet and exercise is insufficient, while self – monitoring of glucose excels. Additionally, the training received by patients is almost nonexistent and so it should become an intervention target. Conclusion: Inadequate patient education and poor self-care affect glycemic control, the regulation of other cardiovascular risk factors, the management of acute complications, as well as the psychological approach to the disease, and these are all areas that can be improved by healthcare professionals and patients.
