The following study is related with the digitalized form of printed books as well as their applicability in school environments. In particular, reference is made to: the course of printed book up to now, starting from the very first typographical efforts to the innumerable production of books, the role played nowadays, especially at school units, and the way in which it has become a part of our daily routine in various electronic forms with various functions. Special reference is made to ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) which can give a different dimension to teaching processes and feedback the existing educational system. Worthy of mention are teaching models and learning theories that form the basis of every design of educational processes, and which shall adapt to possible new digital learning data. Through a path of conceptualization of the electronic book, its features, software and capabilities, as well as, the perspective of countries that have taken steps to pilot applications of electronic books in education, expectations arising from such an innovation are examined as also its possible effects. The functionality that electronic books present in school environments, indicates to their feasible integration into learning processes. Last but not least, a detailed proposal is made for the possible and future implementation of electronic reading in educational institutions.
