Η επίδραση της αύξησης των ορίων συνταξιοδότησης στη επαγγελματική ικανοποίηση των νηπιαγωγών (Bachelor thesis)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the retirement age increase on the preschool teachers ’job satisfaction. It was firstly examined whether retirement age increase is a stressful factor for preschool teachers and secondarily how they manage their stress, what impact it has on their daily work and how it affects their relationships with colleagues and their family environment. The sample consisted of ten (10) preschool teachers, all of which were women, who serve in kindergartens in Thessaloniki and were ≥ 49 years old. A qualitative method was applied for data collection and semi-structured interviews were conducted. The data revealed that the majority of preschool teachers, who participated in the study, were concerned about the retirement age increase and expressed dissatisfaction with the alterations in the legislative status, but also in the economic status of the pensions. On the other hand, preschool teachers compensate for the stress they feel, by drawing personal satisfaction from their profession and by trying to find ways to make their work more interesting. Concerning stressmanagement, most preschool teachers reported that they try to face the situation objectively, while almost all participants in the study reported that they were forced to accept alterations in their retirement status. Also, all the participants are looking for support, regarding possible retirement schemes, from colleagues, spouse or friends. As for the impact on their daily work, the majority of the preschool teachers referred to the possible reduced work efficacy they experience or will experience due to the combination of their increasing age and the certain characteristics of their profession. However, it is noteworthy that most preschool teachers, while feeling frustrated, angry and in an unfair situation, reported that they have not slowed down due to conscientiousness. In addition, the majority of the participants mentioned that lack of time, emotional exhaustion and reduced physical abilities have an effect on their relationships with family members, especially those related to their care. The results of the present study emphasize the necessity of the interventions that need to be made, in order to enhancethe job satisfaction and the working conditions of the preschool teachers, who are at the end of their professional career.
