In the traditional Greek school the library operated as a collection of book storage mainly for recreational use and was cut off from the daily educational work. Rapid technological developments require its evolution and adaptation to the digital information circulation environment and make imperative the need to promote the library as a gateway to knowledge and a vital tool of modern teaching practice. The modern school is a dynamic organization that approaches learning as a result of the student's personal involvement in the processing of information and the discovery of knowledge. Modern school curriculum focuses on flexible forms of participatory teaching and interaction, while focusing on students' social and emotional needs and developing collaborative, creative and critical thinking skills. In this context, is examined the development of the library as a school information center, as a portal of managing and controlling the huge amount o internet's information and as a hub of cooperation with educational, social and cultural networks. The new hybrid type library, which harmonically combines the management of conventional and digital information, supports research and facilitates access for students with special educational needs, requires human resources fully specialized in organizing, coordinating, managing and monitoring the new virtual environment.
