Το φαινόμενο των συγκρούσεων και η διαχείριση τους στο εργασιακό περιβάλλον του Α.Π.Θ. (Master thesis)

The present study seeks to investigate the phenomenon of conflicts in the workplace of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Initially, a bibliographic review was carried out, followed by a quantitative survey, involving 213 employees among the categories of administrative personnel, technical personnel and special teaching staff. The aim to the survey was to investigate: the extent to which those confrontational situations occur, the reasons leading to those conflicts, the employees’ perception of their positive and negative impact on the effectiveness of their service, and the types of staff the confrontations occur most frequently. The study further seeks to identify the most preferred methods of conflict management as well as the criteria that influence their choice and finally, the role that demographic factors play in participants’ responses. The results of the SPSS statistical analysis indicated that conflicts are a common phenomenon in AUTH and that they occur more frequently among informal groups (cliques). It is confirmed that the most important reason for their appearance are organizational weaknesses, such as ambiguities in tasks, while the most often chosen method of conflict management is avoidance. At the same time, the findings highlight that men are experiencing more conflicts that women. Additionally, both men and younger people (under 30) believe that the strategy of collaborating is never adopted, while employees who hold subordinate working positions consider that the strategy of avoidance is frequently adopted. As for the outcomes, all things considered, it is of great importance that the majority of the employees believe that conflicts have a negative impact on the service function, excluding those with work experience up to 10 years
