This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the extent to which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is integrated into secondary education. As more and more teachers attend in-service training programs specialized in exploiting ICT in an effort to
modernize their teaching methods, following modern European educational trends, it is imperative to assess teachers’ digital literacy as well as the degree of didactic utilization of the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired by teachers through relevant in-service training.
It is also worth exploring the scope and frequency of ICT use in educational settings, as well as the attitudes of teachers towards factors hindering the effective ICT integration into the
educational process. The empirical investigation was carried out from July 2019 to January 2020. A sample
of 100 teachers working in secondary schools at Limnos island was selected and a questionnaire with closed-ended questions was used as a data collection tool. The research highlights a moderate level of digital literacy among teachers as well as a moderate frequency
of ICT use, slightly higher than a few times a month. Searching the Internet for course preparation, preparing exercises and worksheets for students and administrative work were the main fields of ICT application. The main inhibitors of ICT integration in the teaching
practice were primarily the ones related to teacher in-service training and, secondarily lack of
time and poor ICT infrastructure. The positive correlation between the level of digital literacy of teachers, the frequency of ICT use in the educational process and the level of ICT skill certification was among the important findings of the research. Regarding the level of digital
literacy of teachers, it was positively correlated to the level of education they received and negatively associated with age and teachers' perceptions regarding the importance of
hindering factors such as lack of support, negative attitudes, teachers’ inadequacy and inservice training. A positive correlation was also found between the level of education received
by teachers and the frequency of ICT use.
