Η αρχιτεκτονική στα πλαίσια της διαθεματικότητας στην εκπαίδευση: αειφόρος ανάπτυξη και βιώσιμος αστικός σχεδιασμός (Master thesis)
Μανώλη, Μαγδαλινή
The main topic of this MSc thesis investigates the cross-thematic approach that
utilizes Architecture and Design as a medium to support and improve learning
results, students’ engagement, enhance creativity and innovation, arouse
consciousness about sustainable development, design thinking and 21st-century
skills and competences. More specifically, it focuses on matters of sustainability and
exploration of the urban environment by children.
Initially, this thesis explores the concept of cross-thematic teaching approach,
and examines thoroughly some of the fundamental characteristics of sustainable
development in accordance with urban design and planning in an educational
context. Moreover, the acquired skills and the pedagogical benefits offered to
children in the context of their engagement with creative education through
Architecture, will be discussed, as well as STEAM cross-curricular characteristics
applied to Architecture and Design projects. Furthermore, this thesis investigates
practices that have been found to be applied from professionals in Architecture
pedagogy around the world, in educational settings, following a cross-thematic
teaching approach, STEAM Learning, Problem Solving, Projects and Phenomena
Based Learning, that promote design thinking process, participatory planning,
placemaking, 3-d model making, etc. Some useful digital platforms are also
introduced and suggested to be used for purposes of Architecture and Design
childrens’ engagement and for school curricular enrichment, making it more
integrated and holistic as well.
Subsequently, the potential of this approach will be further explored through
the development of a series of five (5) creative Architecture and Design workshops
through the STEAM approach, following the Learn-By-Doing, Inquiry Based
Learning and the theory of Multiple Intelligence - with a different methodology
each time. The suggested workshop plans emphasize concepts like “urban design”,
“sustainability”, “green design”, “placemaking” and “passive house”. Participants
will be encouraged to design, plan, construct, make hypothesis, cooperate, investigate, study, measure, synthesize, capture forms, present, draw conclusions,
discuss with each other, discover new concepts and phenomena of the modern
world, as well as they will be asked to think critically and multifaceted about the
impact of their designs on the environment, to classify and to solve real life -
complex problems by suggesting sustainable solutions. Ultimately, they express
themselves aesthetically through design by constructing 3-D architectural models,
with specific and special requirements, following the principles of sustainable
design. The aim is to achieve the cultivation of democracy spirit and citizen’s skills
as well.
In conclusion, Architectural and Design educational programs provide students
with a wide range of skills and tools, capacities, means, and mediums that are
necessary for the 21st century, allowing them to reach their fullest potential and
actively contribute to sustainable development by influencing the formation of our
future environment. This study presents the prospects of incorporating architecture
and design into the educational curriculum and furthermore suggests the
development of new educational approaches that can adequately prepare students
for the challenges of the 21st century.
