The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effective leadership behavior in higher education institutions in order to achieve the employee’s motivation. More specifically, the characteristics which can lead to employees’ motivation are studied based on theory. The transformational leadership model is judged to be the most appropriate for application to higher education institutions. Involvement of employees plays the most important role in implementing leadership style and differs on the basis of the selected leadership model. The choice of a single model is not a realistic scenario, as external factors (i.e. economic conditions) can alter the tactics of the leader or complementarily can lead to the implementation of other models simultaneously with the transformational one.
