Ο Ρόλος των GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS (GDS) και των DEPARTURE CONTROL SYSTEMS (DCS) στην Εξέλιξη των Αερομεταφορών (Master thesis)

ABSTRACT
This thesis is being written under the purpose of completing my Master of Science Degree at Alexander Technological Institution of Thessaloniki in Tourism Management and Business Administration with specialization in Airline Administration and Travel Management.
In this thesis we will attempt to analyze the Global Distribution Systems and the Departure Control Systems in the airline industry. The aim of this paper is to record the evolution of the GDS (Global Distribution Systems) and the DCS (Departure Control Systems), and their role in the development of air transport to date. In conclusion, we will analyze the trends and new technologies to be used in the future and the automation of DCS in the airline industry.
Starting with first chapter of this thesis we will introduce the concepts of tourism and the role of global aviation in the tourism industry.
In the second chapter are specifically analyzed the Computer Reservation Systems and the evolution over the time until the most update operating procedures and conditons of the airlines.
In the third chapter we will analyze the transition from the Computer Reservation Systems to the Global Distribution Systems in the airline industry based on various examples and images.
In the fifth chapter we will attempt to introduce the basic functionalities of Departure Control Systems and the way that the data are being transferred from GDS to the DCS.
In the following chapter we aim to comprehend the functionality and the procedures that are being followed by the airlines, and make a reference to the security procedures that are being defind by the Civil Aviation Authorities and IATA (International Air Transport Association). In the seventh chapter we will attempt to “look into the future” of the Global Distribution Systems.
The methodology of our research is based upon to secondary data from international and local sources. At the same time however, a questionanaire will be used as a research tool, which will be carried out at airline personel and at ground handling staff of an airline at various departments of an airport. We would also like to mention that many examples are based onelements of primary research and personal experience as a result of long term engagement with the aviation industry, using various Global Distribution Systems and Departure Control Systems. It is also noted that the examples given in chapters 4 and 5 regarding functionalities of GDS and DCS in no way corresponded to actual flight data. Data elements are being modified and are used hypothetical names and hypothetical flight data for educational purposes only.
