Introduction: The official definition of food supplements - based on European legislation (Directive 2002/46 / EC) - are called the foods with target to supply a normal diet. They represent the concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with nutritional or physiological effects, alone or in combination. They are commercially available in various forms such as capsules, tablets, pills, and other forms of metering but also in powder sachets, liquid forms, vials with a dropper, forms and other powders, which are to be taken as counted small unit quantities. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the use of DS, by people of our country. The research aimed at highlight that the use of the DS is affected by factors including: sex, age, income, education, physical activity and nutrition of users and non-users, respectively. Finally, we examined knowledge about DS, perceptions, choices and practices that are applied by DS consumers of our country. Methodology: As part of this thesis is investigation and analysis of the use of food supplements within the eating habits of the residents of Piraeus. The research tool used was the questionnaire, which is filled through personal interview with each participant to record the qualitative characteristics of the survey. The survey involved residents of the municipalities of Thessaloniki, Drama and Chios. In particular, the subjects of the research were persons over 15 years. The total sample size was 1200 people. The period of investigation was 25 March 2016-25 April in 2016. For the statistical analysis of the questionnaires used in IBM® SPSS® software package Statistics22. Statistical analysis beyond the descriptive statistical data (frequency distributions, relative frequency), based on the appropriate application of a series of individual tests or techniques of statistical inference Conclusion: Comparative tests carried out did not show statistically significant differences in the use of dietary supplements in relation to sex. In contrast, differences arose in relation to the age where older age (over 30) exhibit higher use of food supplements, namely groups of 41 to 50 years with the highest levels of use. Regarding the side effects from using health supplements in relation to sex differences were observed what concerns the increase in pressure and tachycardia, which seems to occur more frequently in men than women. Compared with age, no variation was observed in the incidence rates of the different effects. Also, those who felt informed about the side effects, adhere to the recommended daily amount at a greater rate compared to respondents who have no knowledge of side effects
